We at the Lighthouse believe that drug and alcohol addiction is a Bio-Psycho-Social disease. It is chronic, progressive in nature, yet is treatable. We believe addiction is used to avoid or cause emotions, feelings, responsibilities, anti-social and criminal behaviors. The Lighthouse believes that recovery is a process that heals the whole person. This is why we take a therapeutic approach with our clients in our philosophy of treatment. We believe that a therapeutic community will help our clients learn a new way of life. They will learn to set both long and short-term goals, and to address the underlying problem, not just the symptoms.
Addiction is a multi-faceted issue and the attitudes, values and beliefs that support these behaviors are learned over time, becoming deeply ingrained in the individual. The Lighthouse’s therapeutic approach is based on the Bio-Psycho-Social treatment modality. We believe this will help the client to rebuild and change their moral and ethical structures and begin a new consistent recovery and lifestyle. They will learn what they value about family, work and friends; as well as how to treat others with dignity and respect. Most of all they will learn how to be honest and to respect themselves.
The Lighthouse believes changing the client’s lives is not something that is done for them or to them; it is something they do for themselves. Change is something that is carried within. Learning to tell the truth and to hear the truth is something we practice here. Clients are allowed to speak their minds as long as they do not harm anyone through purposely imposing their own values and beliefs. We encourage our clients to speak from the heart using their own experiences. The Lighthouse believes that living a meaningful life is not merely to stop using drugs or alcohol; it is rather to replace that part of themselves or their life that was instrumental to their substance use or abuse.
